Our Story

Founded and led by local GPs

The St George Division of General Practice was established to address a clear need: GPs working in the St George area needed a unified, locally-led organisation that understood their specific context and could advocate effectively on their behalf.

Over the years, we have grown from a small group of committed practitioners into a formal charitable organisation incorporated in New South Wales. We are proud to have a dedicated Executive Committee of practising GPs who give their time to ensure the Division continues to serve its members and community.

We create spaces for connection, learning and collaboration; whether through professional development events, peer support networks or strategic partnerships with hospitals, allied health providers and our local Primary Health Network (PHN).

We are proud to be one of seven member companies responsible for the governance of the Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (CESPHN). In this role, we help shape regional health priorities, contribute to strategic decision-making and ensure that the voices of local GPs are heard in broader health system planning.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Sara is the President of the St George Division of General Practice and a dedicated GP who has lived and worked in the St George area for the past 16 years. She is deeply committed to supporting fellow GPs in delivering high-quality, up-to-date, and holistic care to their communities. With a special interest in women’s and children’s health, Sara currently practices at Riverwood Medical, where she combines clinical expertise with compassionate care. She also serves as the Chairperson of the St George and Sutherland ANSC Committee and facilitates the Hurstville and Lugarno PGLs, playing an active role in professional development and peer support for local GPs. Sara is a strong advocate for primary health care, championing its voice through meaningful collaboration with local health providers and health networks. Her leadership reflects a passion for improving systems of care and ensuring community needs are met with empathy and excellence. Outside of work, Sara enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, supporting her family as a proud dance and soccer mum, and staying involved in her church community.

I was born and brought up in India. I graduated from Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College, Pune, India in 1993. After a year’s internship, I did my post graduate studies, Masters in ENT, from Sassoon General Hospital, Pune, India in 1997. After 18 months at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, India as a Clinical Associate in ENT, I travelled overseas. I worked in the Ministry of Health, Sultanate of Oman as a Medical Officer in ENT for 5 years which was an amazing experience of Arabic culture and hospitality which I dearly treasures to this day. With my family, I moved to Wellington, New Zealand in 2005 and soon became a dad. I cherished these amazing times with my only daughter, who is graduating from University this year. It was an exposure to yet another culture and adapting to it, in this picturesque, adorned with greenery and a beautiful sea-coast surrounded land. I moved to the best part of the world Sydney, Australia in 2007. After clearing the AMC exams, I worked at St George and Liverpool hospital as a Surgical and ENT Registrar from 2009 until 2015. With some exhilarating experiences it was time to take stock. I decided to do General practice and completed my Fellowship in 2018. GP has opened up vast horizons for me in terms of a balance with family life, spirituality and academics. Over these years building a patient base has been rewarding. I enjoy the case mix of age groups, complexity’s and the very many undifferentiated presentations.

Tarun has served the Riverwood Community as the practice owner of Caritas Medical Centre since 2006 when he took over his mother’s general practice. His long association with the division began as a medical student. He has served in various roles on the division executive since 2015 including as Treasurer and Secretary and on CESPHN Committees including Health Pathways, Urgent Care Clinics and most recently the Clinical Leaders forum. His passion for the future of General Practice finds expression as a mentor for Medical Students and GP registrars since 2019 and as a facilitator for the Division’s flagship educational initiative in peer group learning for a number of years. General Practice advocacy continues to inspire his efforts in communications with St George Hospital to improve the efficiency of patient access to care and he remains infamous for his curly trivia questions at the bespoke collegial AGM extravaganza held by the Division.
